Product Description

Alnico magnets are produced primarily through a casting method, though a sintering method is also used. The name "Alnico" derives from the key elements of its alloy composition: Aluminium, Nickel, Cobalt, Iron, and Copper. This unique combination of metals results in a magnet that is hard yet brittle, making it extremely challenging to machine or drill, and therefore not recommended for structural use.

In many applications, the as-cast or as-sintered shapes of Alnico magnets are suitable, but for a smoother surface finish with tighter tolerances, precision grinding may be necessary. This additional process can increase the overall cost. Because the production of Alnico magnets involves either casting or sintering, small quantity production runs are generally impractical. If they are undertaken, they often incur significant tooling charges and minimum quantity requirements due to the need for sand molds in casting or die presses in sintering.

The standard grade of Alnico magnets is Alnico 5, although other grades are available and can be provided through our bespoke magnet service. Cast Alnico magnets may contain very small air holes within their structure, which is a normal and unavoidable aspect of the casting process. In contrast, sintered Alnico magnets do not have these air holes.

FAQ

What are the primary uses of red coated Alnico magnets?

Red coated Alnico magnets are commonly used in educational tools, holding applications, and scientific instruments. Their strong magnetic field and excellent temperature stability make them suitable for applications where a durable and reliable magnet is required. The red coating not only provides additional protection against corrosion but also makes them easily identifiable, enhancing their usability in various settings.

How does the red coating benefit the Alnico magnets?

The red coating on Alnico magnets serves multiple purposes. Primarily, it provides an additional layer of protection against corrosion and physical wear, extending the magnet's lifespan. Furthermore, the coating makes the magnets more visible, which is particularly useful in educational and laboratory environments where quick identification is necessary. This coating also improves the aesthetic appeal of the magnets, making them more suitable for use in public or commercial spaces.

Can red coated Alnico magnets withstand high temperatures?

Yes, red coated Alnico magnets can withstand high temperatures. Alnico magnets are known for their excellent temperature stability, maintaining their magnetic properties in environments up to 550°C (1022°F). The red coating does not affect this property, ensuring that these magnets remain effective in high-temperature applications, such as in industrial processes and scientific research.

Are there any special handling requirements for red coated Alnico magnets?

Due to their hard yet brittle nature, red coated Alnico magnets should be handled with care. While the red coating provides some protection, these magnets can still chip or break if dropped or subjected to significant impact. It is advisable to avoid machining or drilling these magnets, as they are difficult to work with and could potentially break. Proper storage and careful handling will help maintain their performance and longevity.

What are the advantages of using Alnico magnets over other types of magnets?

Alnico magnets offer several advantages over other types of magnets, such as Neodymium or Ferrite. They possess superior temperature stability and can operate effectively in high-temperature environments. Additionally, Alnico magnets have excellent corrosion resistance and greater mechanical strength. While they are not as strong as Neodymium magnets, their durability and ability to maintain their magnetic properties under extreme conditions make them ideal for specific industrial and scientific applications. The red coating further enhances these benefits by providing added protection and visibility.
